General Travel Questions
How early should I arrive for my flight at KCI?
Airlines recommend that you complete the check-in process at least two hours before you departure time. To accomplish this, you may need to arrive at ticket counters/kiosks even earlier in case of long lines. If you are parking in our Economy Lot, please allow 20-30 minutes to allow for time for our complimentary shuttle to make its route to the terminal. If you are parking at an off-campus provider, please allow 30 extra minutes of processing and transit time.
What kind of ID do I need to fly out of KCI Airport?
Beginning May 3, 2023, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, passport or other acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States. REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star at the top of the card. If you’re not sure, contact your state driver’s license agency (Missouri, Kansas or full state list) on how to obtain a REAL ID compliant card. For more information on this federally mandated act, please visit the Department of Homeland Security website or the Transportation Security Administration website. A passport is still required for all international flights. For information about obtaining a passport or visa information, visit the website for the Department of State. What can I carry on the airplane and how does it need to be packed?
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has specific rules about what can and cannot be packed in carry-on and checked luggage. Please visit the website for the TSA for a complete list of prohibited items, as well as packing tips to make your travel go as smoothly as possible. In addition, we also recommend that you check with your individual airline for any further security and baggage requirements. Each airline has different rules about the number of items they allow travelers to carry-on or check as luggage. Some airlines may charge extra fees for luggage.

Who built KCI and how long has it been open?
Kansas City International Airport was built by the City of Kansas City, Missouri and opened in 1972.
Has KCI undergone any renovations since it was built?
In the early 2000s the terminals underwent a major renovation in which the buildings were “gutted” from top to bottom. Despite that the terminals’ once revolutionary design is now dated, space is cramped, and amenities no longer meet travelers’ expectations and security needs.
The Aviation Department and the Build KCI team are designing and building a new single terminal that will support more efficient airline operations and allow airport users to enjoy the convenience of modern air travel in a facility with updated technology and amenities, close parking, spacious gate areas, and ample food and beverage options.
At just over one million square feet, the Kansas City International Airport Single Terminal is the largest single infrastructure project in the City’s history. Completion is estimated in 2023, with 39 gates and the ability to expand to 50 in the future, the project will also include a 6,000+-space parking structure along landside and airside improvements. Visit the project website.
How big is KCI?
The KCI complex spans more than 10,000 acres, and its three runways can accommodate up to 139 aircraft operations per hour. Each of its three terminals is more than 1/3 of a mile long at 2,225 feet. In addition to the runways and terminals, other properties located on the KCI complex include: multiple parking lots, consolidated rental car facility, cargo airlines, variety of maintenance buildings, super hangar/overhaul base, gas station, U.S. Post Office, inter-modal office park, hotel and various tenants.
Why does KCI experience so few flight delays?
Uncongested air and ground space, short taxi time, and a low weather-related closure/cancellation rate are why KCI consistently ranks among the lowest in delays of all U.S. airports. Three runways, two of them parallel with 6,575 feet of separation, Category III instrument Landing System and other features help keep operations smooth in even the worst of weather. New surfaces on the runways, taxiways and terminal aprons, along with ongoing infrastructure improvements, enhance the airport's efficiency and convenience to air carriers.
Why does my baggage tag say “MCI” not “KCI”?
Kansas City International Airport (KCI Airport) was originally called Mid-Continent International Airport, or MCI, so the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) adopted MCI as the airport's designator code. It's worth noting that U.S. airports cannot use codes beginning with N, K or W as the first letter of the prefix. N is the prefix reserved for aircraft, and K and W are reserved for radio call sign prefixes. For many years, MCI served as the landing strip for the TWA overhaul base and as an alternate airport for the old Kansas City Municipal Airport. When Municipal was deemed too small and unable to grow, terminals and additional runways were built at what is now KCI. Municipal was renamed Kansas City Downtown Airport, and later Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport.
