In June 1998, a committed group of volunteers came together to form the KCI Airport Ambassadors program. After only a month, the program received such welcoming acceptance that the Kansas City Aviation Department decided to enhance its recruitment efforts to ensure optimal coverage in all of three terminals that were in operation at the time.
“We would like to recognize this program and its volunteers for their efforts at Kansas City International Airport for the last twenty years,” said Pat Klein, director of aviation. "The Ambassadors are often the first smiling face visitors to Kansas City see, so we are proud to have them represent our friendly region. We are pleased with their continued support in providing excellent customer service to KCI’s travelers.”
Administered by Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Mallory, the program consists of two dozen volunteers who act as good-will representatives and roving information booths. They can be recognized with brick-red blazers and a welcoming smile on their faces and their goal is to make sure each trip that travelers make through our airport is as pleasant as possible. Some of their duties include greeting travelers and assisting them with any customer service related needs such as directing them to baggage claim and providing them with information on transportation, hotels, dining, shopping, area attractions and points of interest.
The Aviation Department recognizes and rewards the Ambassadors by treating them to Kansas City experiences. For the 20th anniversary event, the group started at Union Station for the Gangster Tour and ended with a delicious meal at Lidia’s.
Since the launch of the KCI Airport Ambassadors program, the total hours volunteered are estimated to be 100,000 hours and counting. One particular ambassador, Shirley Murray, is an original ambassador whose total hours are estimated to be 6,371 which is the most out of all current volunteers.
