Kansas City International Airport Sees Busiest September in its History

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that 954,292 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International Airport’s gates in September, a 0.3 percent increase from September 2018. Passenger boardings were up 0.1 percent, with a total of 477,585 boarded. For the year to date, total passengers in and out total 8,876,077, up 0.3 percent. Year-to-date passenger boardings are 4,437,456, up 0.2 percent.

“Last month set a new record as the busiest September in Kansas City International Airport’s history, surpassing the September record set in 2018,” said Pat Klein, Kansas City director of aviation. “The most recent fare data from the U.S. Department of Transportation shows passengers at Kansas City International Airport continue to enjoy the lowest fares in the four-state region.” 

Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI, were down 9 percent in September with a total of 15.8 million pounds handled. Year to date, 157.2 million pounds of air cargo have been handled, down 0.1 percent. Air freight handled at KCI during September amounted to 15.2 million pounds, which is down 9.9 percent from September 2018. Year to date, air freight is up 0.3 percent with a total of 152.4 million pounds handled. Air mail for September was up 25.5 percent from September 2018 with 601,391 pounds handled. Air mail is down 11.6 percent year to date with 4.7 million pounds handled. 

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for September 2019 was 169. Service was offered to 44 nonstop markets. There was an average of 40,108 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 5 daily arrivals for September.
