Two Airlines Add Employees at Crew Bases at KCI Airport

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that two airlines are leasing terminal space and are making Kansas City International Airport a base for their flight crews totaling nearly 600 employees. Travelers may not see these employees because all of the activity occurs in non-public areas. The Department worked with the Platte County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association and Zona Rosa to provide welcome bags to the employees.

New to Kansas City is the ExpressJet Airlines crew base located on the concourse and airfield levels of Terminal C. In Kansas City, ExpressJet Airlines operates branded service for United Express. The KCI base currently has 85 flight attendants, 145 pilots, 25 maintenance personnel, and 10 materials personnel for a total of 265 employees. Approximately 40 percent have relocated to the Kansas City area or are planning to move by spring. For years ExpressJet has had a strong presence in Kansas City with its maintenance base here.

ExpressJet Airlines, Inc. is based in College Park, Georgia and it is a wholly owned subsidiary of SkyWest, Inc.

Republic Airways Holdings has operated a crew base at KCI since 2008, and has recently expanded its presence at the airport. From KCI, the Company operates branded flights for American Airlines, US Airways and United Airlines, as well as public charter flights for Caesars Entertainment to several of its key U.S. properties. The Company flies E170s for American, 175s for US Airways, Q400s for United and 190s for Caesars.

Located in Terminal C on the apron level, Republic maintains a crew base for about 320 employees, 240 of whom are pilots and flight attendants (about evenly split) and 80 of whom are maintenance workers. About 25 percent of Republicís employees live in Kansas City, while the rest commute from around the U.S.

The Company leases about 55,000 square feet of hangar floor space, with an additional 20,000 square feet for office back shop and parts storage. The Company also leases 2,400 square feet of line maintenance terminal space, as well as a 1,500-square-foot crew base.
