Downtown Airport Road to be Temporarily Closed Due to Construction

Contractors working at the Wheeler Downtown Airport will be closing the northwest section of Lou Holland Drive to all vehicular, bike, and pedestrian traffic on Monday, August 16, for a period of approximately 30 days due to unsafe conditions. All hangars, businesses, and addresses on Lou Holland Drive will remain accessible from the south part of the loop road surrounding the airport.

Due to the nature of the construction being performed, the road will likely be impassable beyond the barricades and the heavy equipment in use will make conditions unsafe for pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicles. The portion of the roadway within the construction zone will therefore be posted with NO TRESPASSING signs.

This work is part of Phase 2 of the ongoing Runway 1/19 Safety Area Project in which a section of Lou Holland Drive is being realigned to make room for the relocation of the medium intensity approach lighting system with sequenced flashers (MALSF). The realignment of the road will also move it further away from the approach end of Runway 19 and eliminate the need to close the road whenever that Instrument Landing System (ILS) is in use during adverse weather.

At the conclusion of this work, Lou Holland Drive will again be opened for public use.

The Aviation Department sincerely regrets the necessity of this action and any inconvenience this may cause to its tenants and the general public. Safety is a top priority.
