Self-serve “avgas” now available at Kansas City Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC)

The City of Kansas City, Missouri, Aviation Department today announced that its self-serve 100LL “avgas” station is now open for business at Kansas City's Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC). Pilots of piston-engine aircraft can pull up to the pumps and fill up just as they do with their vehicles. The fuel is offered at a price competitive with fuel at other area airports. Payment is as easy as a credit card swipe.

The fueling station and adjacent outdoor aircraft wash pad are part of a $20 million project to bulldoze 40 old hangars and replace them with 96 new hangars including 12 box hangars with radiant floor heating. The hangars were completed in October 2009. The new complex removes a major eyesore witnessed by executives entering Kansas City and replaces it with an attractive facility with added aircraft storage capacity and services for area local and itinerant aircraft operators.

Currently under construction is a general aviation terminal, which includes a pilot lounge and large waiting room capable of accommodating pilot meetings. The terminal is slated for completion in late summer 2010.

Pilots can easily see the green-roofed hangar complex and fueling station on the airport’s west side.

MKC offers aviators a 24-hour control tower, Category I Instrument Landing System, 24-hour fixed base operator (FBO), full aircraft maintenance, hangar facilities, air cargo facilities, aircraft sales, leasing and charters, flight training and car rentals. The Kansas City Airport System is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and is supported wholly by airport user charges. No general tax fund revenues are used for the administration, promotion, operation, or maintenance of the airports in the system.
