Airlines at KCI Airport offer cheaper fares for Midwest travelers than Manhattan, Kan. |
Kansas City International Airport (KCI) helps keep money in regional flyers’ pockets by providing more air service at lower fares compared to most Midwest airports, including Manhattan, Kan. (MHK). As a result, savvy travelers are making the easy drive to Kansas City to take advantage of low fares, convenient nonstop destinations and larger airplanes.
Recent news articles have cited that Manhattan air fares are often cheaper. However, a City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department analysis of the top 20 destinations from KCI and MHK from the most recent U.S. Department of Transportation origin and destination data reveals that KCI has the lower fare 100 percent of the time. The average fare to the top 20 destinations was $123.76 from KCI and $210.40 from MHK. MHK is 70 percent more expensive than KCI to these top markets. Further, most flights from KCI are on large mainline jets, rather than regional jets or turboprops.
Sample fare comparisons:
Destination Kansas City Manhattan Percent difference in fare
Las Vegas $122 $255 108%
Los Angeles $142 $239 69%
Chicago $98 $180 84%
St. Louis $82 $205 150%
Nashville $90 $478 434%
“The 12 airlines serving KCI offer 200 departures, over 20,000 seats and 47 nonstop destinations compared to two airlines, nine departures, 233 seats and four nonstop destinations in Manhattan,” Aviation Department Director Mark VanLoh said. “KCI’s low fares and nonstop flights make it easier than ever for passengers to reach the most popular destinations without having to connect as often. With convenient highway access and Economy Parking at just $5.50 per day, KCI is worth the drive.”
