KCI Airport Reports June traffic

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that Kansas City International Airport recorded 932,404 passengers arriving and departing through its gates in June, which represents a decrease of 8.2 percent from June 2008. Passenger boardings at KCI were down 10.4 percent, with a total of 461,537 during June. For the year to date, boardings at KCI totaled 2,350,398, a decrease of 15.9 percent from the same period last year.

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for June was 212. Service was offered to 48 nonstop markets. There was an average of 40,636 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day, down 12.0 percent from last year.

“Signs point to a potential recovery in air travel at KCI early next year,” Director of Aviation Mark VanLoh said. “Bolstered by new United service to San Francisco and new Southwest Airlines flights to Milwaukee, the year over year change in available seats from KCI could turn positive in early 2010. Our airline partners continue to show a strong level of commitment to Kansas City.”

Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI were down 23.0 percent in June. For the year to date, air cargo at KCI is down 25.2 percent from the same period last year. Air freight handled at KCI during June amounted to more than 14 million pounds, which represents a year-over-year decrease of 21.9 percent. Air mail for June was down 41.8 percent from June 2008. The all-cargo carriers reported four daily departures for June.
