KCI Cruise Night Brings Classic and Muscle Cars to Airport Area |
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department is revving up for the KCI Cruise Night. On Saturday, June 20, Kansas City International Airport may look like a scene from the movie “American Graffiti,” as hundreds of classic muscle and special-interest cars descend on the KCI area for the KCI Cruise Night.
In 2007 and 2008 the Aviation Department held successful KCI Cruise Nights, drawing an estimated 500 show cars, 200 spectator cars and hundreds of attendees from miles around. The June 20 and Oct. 3 KCI Cruises will be held from 4-8 p.m., east of KCI Airport and I-29 at the Ambassador Building at 12200 N.W. Ambassador Drive, in the current WireCo and former Farmland headquarters building.
Cruise Nights are the latest craze in car culture where owners of classic, muscle and other special interest autos gather to show off their prized possessions and share their love of cars with other enthusiasts and anyone who likes cars. There is no real “cruising” occurring, as vehicles are parked in a parking lot, usually with hoods open to display engine chrome and detailing. Participants “hang out” by their cars or wander to admire others’ cars, and the general public shows up to enjoy the cars, as well.
The Aviation Department plans the events as fundraisers for the City’s Combined Charities Campaign, which bundles a variety of local, regional and national charities. Prizes were donated by tenants, area businesses and the KCI Rewards Frequent Parker Program. The prizes include NASCAR, Royals and T-Bones tickets, as well as gasoline cards, airline vouchers, Schlitterbahn passes, hotel stays, rental cars, dinners and more. Chances are $1 each and there will also be a $1-a-chance 50/50 drawing. KCI concessionaire HMS Host will donate hot dogs and chips for sale for $1, with its employees volunteering to cook.
Attendees can learn about the KCI Rewards Frequent Parker Program and sign up so they can start earning free parking and prizes.
More information about the KCI Cruise Night and a map is available at http://www.flykci.com/cruise. Directional signs will be posted near KCI the day of the event.
