KCI Airport recycling program wins award |
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department’s Recycling Committee has been selected by the Missouri Recycling Association to receive the 2009 award for Outstanding Leadership in Recycling.
Each year the association’s awards program recognizes individuals and organizations in Missouri for their accomplishments in recycling and waste reduction. More than 20 nominations were submitted and winners were selected for their innovation and effectiveness in recycling.
In 2008, the Aviation Department:
- Created a recycling committee to oversee the program and handle collection of recyclables from department facilities
- Collected recyclables at several special events
- Created a year-long incentive program including bi-monthly drawings
- Increased its recyclable collection by 57 percent from 2007 and nearly doubled the rebates earned over last year
- Conducted a one-time scrap metal collection from a re-roofing project which resulted in an additional $33,766 in rebates
Already a “green” pioneer locally with its fleet of compressed natural gas buses, the Aviation Department last year joined airports world-wide in committing to environmental responsibility.
The Kansas City Airport System is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and is supported wholly by airport user charges. No general tax fund revenues are used for the administration, promotion, operation, or maintenance of the airports in the system. Visit http://www.flykci.com for more information.
