KCI Cruise Night to Bring Classic & Muscle Cars to Airport |
KANSAS CITY, June 20, 2008 – On Saturday, June 28, 4 to 8 p.m., Kansas City International Airport may look like the movie American Graffiti, as hundreds of classic, muscle and special-interest cars will descend on KCI for the KCI Cruise Night.
Cruise Nights are the latest craze in car culture where owners of classic, muscle and other special interest autos gather to show off their prized possessions and share their love of cars with other enthusiasts and anyone who likes cars. There is no real cruising occurring, as vehicles are parked in a parking lot, usually with hoods open to display engine chrome and detailing. Participants hang out by their cars or wander to admire others’ cars, and the general public shows up to enjoy the cars, as well.
Twice last summer, lured by the prospect of cool cars, prizes and airplanes flying overhead, an estimated 700+ people packed into an estimated 550 show cars, and 200 spectator cars descended on the parking lot. Cars of all types were on hand including classic Chevies, Oldsmobiles, Buicks, Pontiacs, Fords, Mopars (Chryslers, Dodges, and Plymouths), Hot Rods, Rat Rods, Triumphs, Ferraris, and Mercedes. A 1920s Ford Model T was there as well as a late-model Fort GT40. At each event, when all was said and done, more than 1,250 hot dogs, 40 cases of bottled water and hundreds of bags of chips had been consumed. The parking lot used quickly overflowed.
The June 28 event and will move to a much larger location near a runway, for added excitement. The area to be used is a portion of the former Satellite Lot on Paris St. near the gas station. There is no charge to park a car and the public is welcome. Attendees can enter to win great prizes include Richard Petty NASCAR Ride-Alongs, airline discounts, Royals tickets, car rentals and gas. Hot dogs and refreshments will be available, and vendors will be on hand. The event will benefit the Kansas City of Kansas City, Missouri Combined Charities Campaign. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, where half of the proceeds go to a lucky winner and half go to the charity. Another event is scheduled for October 4 at the same time and location. Signs will direct cruise-goers to the Paris Street location.
The Kansas City Airport System is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and is supported wholly by airport user charges. No general tax fund revenues are used for the administration, promotion, operation or maintenance of the airports in the system. Visit www.flykci.com.
