KCI Airport Passenger Traffic Down 0.9 Percent in April |
KANSAS CITY, MO., May 30, 2008 – Kansas City International Airport (KCI) recorded 876,024 passengers arriving and departing through its gates in April, which represents a decrease of 0.9 percent from April 2007. Passenger boardings at KCI were down 0.6 percent, totaling 450,489 during April. For the year to date, boardings at KCI totaled 1,764,451, an increase of 3.2 percent from the same period last year.
“Dramatic increases in energy costs are reflected in our tenant airlines’ decision to pare back system-wide capacity this summer,” said Director of Aviation Mark VanLoh. “In spite of a strong local economy and increasing convention traffic, KCI is not insulated from downward capacity adjustments. Currently published flight schedules show seat capacity at KCI down five to ten percent year over year for the peak summer period.”
The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures in April was 271. Service was offered to 68 nonstop markets. There was an average of 46,208 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day.
KCI air cargo tonnages, which consist of freight and mail, were up 0.7 percent in April. For the year to date, air cargo at KCI is down 2.7 percent from the same period last year. Air freight handled at KCI during the month surpassed 21 million pounds, which represents a year over year increase of 3.0 percent. Air mail for April exceeded 1.1 million pounds, down 28.5 percent from April 2007. The all-cargo carriers reported eight daily departures for April.
KCI’s Ground Transportation Index in January recorded 17.5 million pounds processed at the airport. The index measures time-definite products carried by ground modes of transport.
