KCI Airport Passenger Traffic Up 1.7 Percent in March

KANSAS CITY, MO., April 25, 2008 – Kansas City International Airport (KCI) recorded 956,182 passengers arriving and departing through its gates in March, which represents an increase of 1.7 percent from March 2007. Passenger boardings at KCI were up 3.1 percent, totaling 492,061 during March. For the year to date, boardings at KCI totaled 1,313,962, an increase of 4.5 percent from the same period last year.

“Unfavorable economic conditions are forcing air carriers to make downward adjustments in capacity, but at KCI, American, Frontier, Great Lakes and Northwest have increased summer capacity at KCI from last year,” said Director of Aviation Mark VanLoh. “In fact, passenger volume at KCI has increased in 26 of the last 27 months. The year over year improvement speaks to the strong demand for travel to and from the Kansas City region.”

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures in March was 269. Service was offered to 71 nonstop markets. There was an average of 47,302 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day.

KCI air cargo tonnages, which consist of freight and mail, were down 7.4 percent in March. For the year to date, air cargo at KCI is down 3.5 percent from the same period last year. Air freight handled at KCI during the month surpassed 20 million pounds, which represents a year over year decrease of 5.2 percent. Air mail for March exceeded 1.0 million pounds, down 35.6 percent from March 2007. The all-cargo carriers reported eight daily departures for March.
